| | | European Knightly Swords also called Arming Swords
| The knightly sword also called an arming sword is a one-handed sword of Oakeshott type XI, XII, XIII, and XIIIa. Sometimes type X swords are included if they are transitional blades using more modern medieval cross guards and pommel styles. Sword blades were often re-used and equipped with new fittings and put back into service. The knightly sword covers a time period from 1000 a.d. to about 1350 a.d. though some were still in use until the 1500's.
Typically these swords were used with a shield or buckler, and would have been worn even when not in armor. Blade length would have varied, but was usually 28” to 30” with an overall length of about 36”.
