The term Rapier usually refers to a sword that is long and slender predominantly used for thrusting. The blade of a rapier may have a cutting surface and still be considered a rapier, but it is generally to give the blade more versatility in attacks. Most rapiers have elaborate baskets or cups to protect the sword hand. The basket or bell of a rapier is the primary way of classifying them.
The rapier evolved from the heavier side-swords also called cut and thrust swords of the early renaissance. Rapiers came into fashion in the late 1500’s and were still used to some degree into the 1700’s. By the 1750’s the rapier had been mostly replaced by the smallsword. The smallsword or court sword was developed in the 1600’s and became popular in civilian circles to wear as clothing accessory.
